What To Wear For The Serious Reenactor

Chainmail is a type of armor that consists of small metal rings linked together to form a mesh. In many cultures through out history, it has been used for the protection for soldiers, as it had the ability to deflect swords and edged weapons. Over time as weapons of war changed, chainmail evolved too. However, it always remained an important piece of armor because of its enduring ability to defend the wearer.

The word 'chainmail' probably originated in the 17th century, from the words maille (French for knitting) or macula (Latin for mesh), and was initially only referred to as mail. Historically, it has been used in Europe, Middle East and even in Asia. It owes its almost universal appeal to its functionality, versatility and protective utility in various conditions and circumstances.

Nowadays, it is found in historical reenactments of various historical periods on stage or on film, or in the meat packing industry where butchers use it as protective gear when working with certain machinery. In some countries, law enforcement officials use protective gear that contains chainmail shirts to protect them against knife attacks, while it is commonly used by scuba divers to protect them from shark bites and by animal control personnel to protect them against animal attacks.

Nowadays, you can find a chainmail shirt made with a variety of different materials like bronze, brass, titanium, aluminum, stainless steel, galvanized steel and even copper. The use of different materials means that you can find a shirt in different weights, colors and patterns, giving you countless choices. It is no more a practical piece of protective gear, it has evolved into an accessory that people want to own.

When you buy a chainmail shirt, you usually get a bag of extra rings so that if you accidentally damage your chainmail, repairs can be made easily with only the help of needle nose pliers. Since a chainmail shirt does not stretch, you can not put it on like a regular shirt. First, you have to lay the shirt flat on the ground. Then bend over and put both arms into the bottom of the shirt and let your hands find the end of the sleeves. Then stand up and pass your head though the neck hole. The chainmail will slide down your body. If you have long hair, tie up your hair before you wear your chainmail shirt, otherwise your hair could get tangled in the chainmail rings. Make sure you wear a shirt or T-shirt underneath the chainmail or the edges of the rings, if too sharp, could scratch you.

Chainmail shirts come in various sizes. Generally, a large sized chainmail shirt will fit people who wear regular T-Shirts sizes XL and XXL. A medium sized one would fit anyone who wears regular T-Shirts of small, medium or large sizes. Most women would fit the medium size perfectly. Also, the shirt may appear longer on skinny people and shorter in length on overweight people because of the way the chainmail spreads horizontally.

Nowadays, many people use the chainmail shirt as an interesting display item in their home or have it as part of their history or military collection, while others wear it under their armor at the Renaissance Fair or in the SCA. Chainmail gives you flexibility and is tougher than light armor. Usually, when you make a purchase you also receive a coife and the hauberk.
